Seeking:  Elizabeth Ann Kelly
Location:  Greater London
Message:  Hi , I don\\\'t know the date of birth which makes searching difficult but I have had a guess. Elizabeth Ann Kelly was a domestic servant in Hampstead,London, when she had my mum,she kept my mum for a month as we found the baptism cert, which also had a Kathleen Kellyas godmother. Then Elizabeth had my mum adopted,we know my mum was baptised and her name was Marian, which was kept as her nameeven after being adopted. I wondered if Kathleen could be her sister. All this was in April 1938 so a long way back, but my mum is still trying to find out about her family especially since my dad passed away only 4 weeks ago.We don\\\'t have much detailbut I do know that the addresses we have have been checked at electoral rolls and Elizabeth was under 21 but Kathleen was 21 or more because she showed up.Anyone who may know either people or relatives we would be sohappy to hear. His adopted family had an adopted girl of 2 yrs in 1974. The adoption agency was in the crypt of Holy Trinity Church Brompton London. Seeking:  Stuart Gillespie I Hope You Understand :(:(unwed Mothers & Adoption In The 1960'
Location:  No Regional Information : No Town Information
Message:  In the 1950s and 1960s, the stigma of illegitimacy was such that many young women in their late teens and early 20s were more or less forced to give up their babies. They were expected to go away to mother and baby homes, and six weeks later, sign over their child to someone else. They were then expected to make a fresh start and forget the babies they gave away. But the women didn’t forget. Every day, each one of them thought about the babies society wouldn’t let them keep. Some of the stories are heart-wrenching. Doreen, who went to tell her Navy boyfriend she was pregnant only to find he was already married with a family, refused point blank to sign the forms so her son Michael could be adopted. She vividly described throwing the pen across the room as officials tried to force her. Only when she was threatened with being sent to a mental institution did she finally give in. Parental pressure during the post-war era was a tremendous influence too. Girls who got pregnant were seen to have brought shame on the family. The men involved didn’t come into it at all. Many of these women were ‘sent away’ to mother and baby homes for the duration of the pregnancy and birth, only being allowed home when the baby had been adopted. The messages were repeated over and over. Young pregnant women were told that adoption would give their baby both a mother and a father and a home full of nice things – things that they wouldn’t be able to do. With little or no support from family or state, it was virtually impossible for a young woman with a baby to support herself financially, or find suitable accommodation. The women who gave their babies away came across as tortured souls. Most of them were now in their 60s and 70s, but all had vivid recollections of the precious moments they were allowed to spend with their babies before they were adopted. Though Liz knew that her baby daughter was going to be adopted, she remained heartbroken at not being allowed to say goodbye to her. Her daughter was taken from her cot by the nuns at the mother and baby home as she slept. Liz’s shock at the deviousness of this act was still palpable. Yet this was one of the stories with a happy ending. Though she went on to marry and have seven sons, Liz never forgot her daughter, praying that one day she would try and find her. That moment came when her daughter had a child of her own.

Seeking:  Jean Joan Atherton And John Sandringham Parents Of Terence
Location:  No Regional Information : No Town Information
Message:  I am trying to find a lost set of grandparents. The details i have are the child was born in the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin and adopted by his new parents in the city of Londonderry in 1948 through the courts in the November. The Birth parents names on the cert were, John Sandringham and Jean or Joan Atherton. The childs birth name was Terrence... However having looked very hard to find these people i have been told that perhaps these were not the real names even though i have the cert with them on. This child was not the first born to this lady. However and where ever they are i would love to make contact. It did say that the father was dead before the birth but of course that may be to hinder a search. Should they have passed on i would still like to find where they are sleeping forever as they are my daughters grandma and grandpa... I would ask all who choose to give a child to other parents to remember that they are also giving away their grandchildren. There is also a very Big risk that because of the style of life and travel in today\\\'s world that my daughter could come home someday with a young man only to find out that his mum or dad could be her own dads brother or sister... My phone number if you think you can help is 00353868862740. As the song says Somewhere out there... They could be sitting and thinking no one cares but i do and they have a beautiful grandaughter age 29yrs. Please note the child that was adopted is alive and well but i did not put his adopted name on this request... Wishing and waiting, Valerie xxx
